Marion McLaughlin Coombes (1900 - 1947)
Marion McLaughlin was a daughter of George McLaughlin (1876-1950) and Elizabeth (Bessie) Huxford (1876-1953). And apparently that is the proper spelling of her first name, though it occasionally shows up as Marian, the usually female spelling.

Marion's story begins with a teenage marriage, followed by the kind of divorce that was as popular many years ago as Las Vegas weddings are today. The religious difference might have been a factor in the break up of the marriage. Marion was Catholic and continued to attend St. Mary's Church after her divorce, while the Coombes family was Methodist. Times were much different back then.

And while Annie Coombes may have been a wonderful person, I suspect Marion McLaughlin considered the woman the mother-in-law from hell.

Affidavit Bares Divorce in West
George Coombes, Skaneateles, Obtained Decree, Foreclosure Reveals
An affidavit filed in mortgage foreclosure proceedings in the Onondaga County clerk’s office yesterday disclosed the fact George Coombes of Skaneateles obtained a divorce from his wife, Mrs. Marion Coombes of that village, in Los Angeles, California, February 26.

The couple have been estranged for some time, but it is said members of the two families were the only persons aware until lately that Coombes had obtained his freedom while on an extended stay in California.

The divorce was disclosed when Coombes filed an affidavit and was awarded possession by Justice Cheney of $177.36 as the surplus moneys remaining after payment of a mortgage foreclosure last year.

Mrs. Annie Coombes, mother of Coombes, brought the foreclosure action, naming her husband, Harry Coombes her son and daughter-in-law as defendants. The affidavit of the son state he was sole owner of the Skaneateles property, having purchased it from his father in 1924. The mortgage that figured in the transaction was assigned by Coombes to his mother.

In order to show that Mrs. Marion Coombes had no claim on the property, the affidavit set forth Coombes was granted a divorce in California five months ago. The foreclosure action of Mrs. Coombes was filed through Charles R. Milford Jr., attorney.
